Cuộc sống trong thời hiện đại có rất nhiều nhu cầu khác ngoài thời gian làm việc, nên thời gian dành cho việc đọc không thể tăng thêm được.
Mặc dù mọi người không ai muốn lâm vào tình trạng thiếu thông tin, không ai muốn lâm vào tình trạng thiếu thông tin, không ai muốn mình trở nên lạc hậu. Do vậy tồn tại một mâu thuẫn khó giải quyết giữa nhu cầu kiến thức, khối lượng sách báo, tài liệu khoa học kỹ thuật với các điều kiện cần thiết để thu nhận và nắm vững thông tin. Chính vì lẽ đó, mọi người trong xã hội đã và đang nâng cao tốc độ đọc của mình.

Bắt đầu từ nửa cuối thế kỷ XX, sự bùng nổ thông tin đã kéo theo những tài liệu in ấn khổng lồ. Hiện nay, trên thế giới cứ 10 đến 15 năm thì khối lượng tin ra tăng gấp đôi, và bạn thử hình dung cứ mỗi phút có khoảng 5-7 nghìn trang sách ra đời! Chỉ trong nửa thế kỷ qua, khối lượng sách in đã tăng lên 4 đến 5 lần, song đó chưa phải giới hạn. Các nhà bác học tính rằng, cứ đà này thì trong khoảng vào thập kỷ nữa, quả đất của chúng ta sẽ được phủ một “tấm chăn giấy” dày tới... nửa mét. Do khao khát tri thức, đội quân đọc sách báo cũng tăng lên ghê gớm. Ở một nước có chừng 200 triệu dân đã có khoảng 400 ngàn thư viện và xấp xỉ 4 tỷ cuốn sách, kéo theo hàng trăm triệu người đến đọc.

Tài đọc nhanh cá biệt là thuộc tính của bộ óc có tổ chức cao và tập trung cao độ. Các thiên tài thế giới như Cácmác, V.I.Lênin, Balzắc, Napôlêon... đã nổi tiếng là những người đọc nhanh. Ví dụ: Napôlêon đọc được 2000 từ trong vòng một phút, văn hào Balzắc đọc một cuốn tiểu thuyết vào trăm trang chỉ trong vòng nửa giờ đồng hồ, còn V.I. Lênin thì người đã đọc nhiều và đọc nhanh tới mức “khủng khiếp”. Cách đọc của Người không đọc từ dòng này qua dòng khác mà là lướt từ trang này qua trang khác, nhanh chóng nắm nội dung một cách chính xác, thế mà khi cần vẫn thuộc từng câu, từng chữ của những vấn đề quan trọng trong cuốn sách. Rõ ràng là đọc và đọc sách báo tài liệu trong mọi thời đại, ở mọi lúc, mọi nơi không chỉ là khả năng thể lực, là thói quen lao động trí óc đơn thuần mà phải được xem như một khả năng dẫn tới hoạt động sáng tạo của trí óc gắn liền với việc xử lý thông tin và đưa ra các giải pháp cần thiết. Nó đã thực sự đóng vai trò quan trọng trong quá trình gián tiếp hay trực tiếp thúc đẩy sản xuất phát triển.

Sau đây là mười “quy tắc vàng” để giúp bạn đọc nhanh hơn”:

- Quy tắc 1: Đọc không lùi lại. Dù bài về khoa học kỹ thuật khó đến đâu cũng chỉ đọc một lần. Không được chuyển động mắt trở lại. Chỉ khi đã đọc xong và suy nghĩ về những điều đã đọc, mới có thể đọc lại bài nếu như thật cần thiết.

- Quy tắc 2: Đọc và hiểu thông tin theo khối thuật toán tích hợp. Phải thường xuyên nhớ nội dung của từng khối. Trong quá trình đọc, hãy tìm cách trả lời những câu hỏi tiêu chuẩn đề ra cho mỗi khối của thuật toán.

- Quy tắc 3: Đọc không phát thành tiếng. Đọc mà phát âm là kẻ thù của việc đọc nhanh. Hãy thực hiện các bài tập và gõ nhịp để nhịn phát âm. Khi thấy tốc độ đọc bị giảm cần phải luyện lại.

- Quy tắc 4: Chuyển động mắt theo chiều thẳng đứng khi đọc. Khi đọc, mắt di chuyển theo chiều thẳng đứng từ trên xuống dưới, theo dòng tưởng tượng đi từ giữa trang giấy. Hãy tập phát triển thói quen nhìn ngoại vi. Hãy đọc báo có cột hẹp, rồi đọc sách, sơ bộ vạch đường ở giữa trang bằng bút chì. Phấn đấu đọc một trang chỉ trong 10 – 15 giây, cố hiểu được nội dung chung. Tuỳ mức độ thành thục trong việc di chuyển mắt mà chuyển sang đọc hiểu cả trang sách chỉ trong 30 giây.

- Quy tắc 5: Tập trung tư tưởng thật cao độ khi đọc. Tập trung là chất xúc tác của quá trình đọc. Đọc nhanh lại càng đòi hỏi tập trung trí não với cường độ cao hơn để tư duy và nắm bắt vấn đề nhanh hơn.

- Quy tắc 6: Hiểu những điều đã đọc trong quá trình đọc. Khi đọc cần làm rõ các từ khoá, các điểm tựa suy lý, tức là các điểm tựa để hiểu bài và nhận thức vấn đề. Nhớ rằng khi đọc là quá trình tìm kiếm và xử lý ý tưởng và ý nghĩa.

- Quy tắc 7: Áp dụng các cách nhớ chủ yếu trong khi đọc. Mục đích của việc đọc để nhớ. Nhớ cái gì tuỳ theo mục đích đọc cần thiết của mình và chỉ nên nhớ những gì hiểu được. Không cần nhớ từng câu, từng chữ nhưng phải nhớ ý tưởng và ý đồ của tác giả cuốn sách.

- Quy tắc 8: Đọc với tốc độ biến đổi. Biết đọc với các tốc độ khác nhau cũng rất quan trọng. Có chỗ chỉ cần đọc lướt qua, song có trang thì nên đọc chậm lại để hiểu được thực chất vấn đề. Hãy biết chọn cách đọc cần thiết, đúng lúc và đúng chỗ.

- Quy tắc 9: Phải thường xuyên luyện tập, củng cố không ngừng thói quen đọc.

- Quy tắc 10: Đặt tiêu chuẩn đọc mỗi ngày 2 tờ báo, 1 tờ tạp chí và khoảng 50 đến 70 trang sách.

Làm được 10 điều như vậy, sau một thời gian ngắn chắc chắn bạn sẽ là người đọc sách báo nhanh hơn và hiệu quả hơn rất nhiều người.

I dreamed I had an interview with God.
"Come in" God said. "So, you would like to interview Me?"

"If you have the time," I said.

God smiled and said: "My time is eternity and is enough to do everything; What questions do you have in mind to ask me?"

"What surprises you most about mankind?"

God answered:


"That they get bored of being children, are in a rush to grow up, and then long to be children again.

"That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health.

"That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live neither for the present nor the future.

God's hands took mine and we were silent for awhile and then I asked...
"As a parent, what are some of life's lessons you want your children to learn?"

God replied with a smile:

"To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but who they have in their lives.

"To learn that there are persons that love them dearly, but simply do not know how to express or show their feelings.

"To learn that money can buy everything but happiness.

"To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it totally different.

"To learn that a true friend is someone who knows everything about them...and likes them anyway.

"To learn that it is not always enough that they be forgiven by others, but that they have to forgive themselves."

I sat there for awhile enjoying the moment. I thanked Him for his time and for all that He has done for me and my family, and He replied,

"Anytime. I'm here 24 hours a day. All you have to do is ask for me, and I'll answer."

 A young, new preacher was walking with an older, more seasoned preacher in the garden one day. Feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to do, he was asking the older preacher for some advice.

The older preacher walked up to a rosebush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to open it without tearing off any petals. The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older preacher and was trying to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his wanting to know the will of God for his life and ministry.

 But because of his great respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to try to unfold the rose, while keeping every petal intact. It wasn't long before he realized how impossible this was to do.

Noticing the younger preacher's inability to unfold the rosebud without tearing it, the older preacher began to recite the following poem:

It is only a tiny rosebud,
A flower of God's design;
But I cannot unfold the petals
With these clumsy hands of mine.The secret of unfolding flowers
Is not known to such as I.
GOD opens this flower so sweetly,
Then, in my hands, they die.

If I cannot unfold a rosebud,
This flower of God's design,
Then how can I have the wisdom
To unfold this life of mine?
So I'll trust in Him for leading
Each moment of my day.
I will look to Him for His guidance
Each step of the pilgrim way.

The pathway that lies before me,
Only my Heavenly Father knows.
I'll trust Him to unfold the moments,
Just as He unfolds the rose.

Today, when I awoke, I suddenly realized that this is the best day of my life, ever! There were times when I wondered if I would make it to today; but I did! And because I did I'm going to celebrate!


Today, I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable life I have had so far: the accomplishments, the many blessings, and, yes, even the hardships because they have served to make me stronger. I will go through this day with my head held high, and a happy heart.

 

I will marvel at God's seemingly simple gifts: the morning dew, the sun, the clouds, the trees, the flowers, the birds. Today, none of these miraculous creations will escape my notice.


Today, I will share my excitement for life with other people. I'll make someone smile. I'll go out of my way to perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone I don't even know.
 
Today, I'll give a sincere compliment to someone who seems down. I'll tell a child how special he is, and I'll tell someone I love just how deeply I care for her and how much she means to me.


Today is the day I quit worrying about what I don't have and start being grateful for all the wonderful things God has already given me. I'll remember that to worry is just a waste of time because my faith in God and his Divine Plan ensures everything will be just fine.

And tonight, before I go to bed, I'll go outside and raise my eyes to the heavens. I will stand in awe at the beauty of the stars and the moon, and I will praise God for these magnificent treasures.


As the day ends and I lay my head down on my pillow, I will thank the Almighty for the best day of my life. And I will sleep the sleep of a contented child, excited with expectation because I know tomorrow is going to be the best day of my life, ever!

There are two days in every week
about which we should not worry,
two days which should be kept free
from fear and apprehension.
 

One of these days is YESTERDAY
with all its mistakes and cares,
its faults and blunders,
its aches and pains.

YESTERDAY has passed forever
beyond our control.
All the money in the world
cannot bring back YESTERDAY.

We cannot undo a single act we performed;
we cannot erase a single word we said.
YESTERDAY is gone forever.
 

 
The other day we should not
worry about is TOMORROW
with all its possible adversities, burdens,
its large promise and its poor performance;
TOMORROW is also beyond our immediate control.

TOMORROW'S sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it will rise.
Until it does, we have no stake in TOMORROW,
for it is yet to be born.
 

This leaves only one day, TODAY.
Any person can fight the battle of just one day.
It is when you and I add the burdens
of those two awful eternities
YESTERDAY and TOMORROW that we break down.

It is not the experience of  TODAY
that drives a person mad...
It is the remorse or bitterness of something
which happened YESTERDAY and the dread of what
TOMORROW may bring.

Let us, therefore,
Live but One Day at a Time.
