PHÂN TÍCH

Ban nhạc The Turtles được sáng lập bởi hai nghệ sỹ chơi saxophone Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, thể loại surf-rock, acoustic folk và một vài thể loại khác. Ban đầu họ thường chơi phụ cho các ban nhạc The Coasters, Sonny And Cher and The Righteous Brothers. Sau đó một thời gian, họ bắt đầu tự hát và ký một vài hợp đồng với hãng White Whale Records dưới cái tên The Crosswind Singers.

Nhóm The Turtles

Khi trào lưu âm nhạc Anh tràn vào thị trường Mỹ bắt đầu bởi Beatles, không biết tại sao họ lại đổi tên thành The Tyrtles . Năm 1965, ban nhạc đổi tên thành The Turtles, chắc để cho phát âm hơi giống The Byrds, một trong những ban nhạc tiên phong trong thể loại folk-rock. Và cũng giống như The Byrds, The Turtles cũng phát hành đĩa đơn đầu tiên cover lại bài hát của Bob Dylan là "It Ain't Be Babe." Sau đó họ sáng tác một vài bài có nội dung buồn bã, u ám và đã thất bại trên thị trường âm nhạc vì vậy, họ quyết định phải thay đổi, ghi âm những bài hát vui vẻ, trong sáng.

Alan Gordon kể lại quá trình sáng tác bài hát: Tôi đã sáng tác được một nửa phần lời nhưng chưa tìm ra giai điệu phù hợp. Vào một buổi sáng, sau một đêm không ngủ, khi trên đường tới thăm cha tôi ở Ayer, Massachusetts, tôi ghé vào một quán ăn tên là Park Street Diner ở thị trấn. Trong cơn buồn ngủ, một giai điệu của Jacobs (người chơi guitar trong ban nhạc The Magicians) thường chơi đã ám ảnh đầu óc tôi và bất chợt tôi thấy nó trở nên phù hợp với lời của bài hát

“the endless dumb gigs we were playing and having a songwriter's block. About the only melody that was throbbing in my tired, fried brain at that hour was the time-immemorial repeated open string pattern that Allen (Jake) Jacobs, the Magician's lead guitarist, would use as he incessantly tuned and retuned after, before, and frequently during each piece we played. Suddenly, some words began to fit and literally minutes later music and lyrics started to take shape.”

Sau đó Alan Gordon đã mời Alan cùng hợp tác để sáng tác nhưng Jacobs đã từ chối, cho là quá đơn giản. Alan Gordon phải nhờ sự giúp đỡ từ Gary và họ đã hoàn thành công việc.

Khi Gary Klein ở văn phòng Koppleman/Rubin được nghe bài hát, ngay lập tức, ông biết rằng đó chính là bài hát mà The Turtles đang cần để thay đổi bộ mặt của mình. The Turtles đã ghi âm nó năm 1967. Ba năm sau, ban nhạc tan rã. Bài hát đã từng đứng # 1 tại Mỹ và 12 tại Anh.

Sau đó có rất nhiều ca sỹ, ban nhạc biểu diến lại bài hát và cũng có được những thành công như năm 1979, T.G. Sheppard đứng # 8 các bài country hay nhất, năm 1991 đứng trong top-10 UK với Jason Donovan Một vài ca sĩ cũng từng biểu diễn như: Mel Torme, The Ventures, The Vogues, Buck Wild, Vikki Carr, Petula Clark, Melba Moore, Donny Osmond, Percy Faith and Frank Zappa.

Bài hát cũng đã được dùng để quảng cáo của nhiều hãng như: Burger King, The NFL, Nintendo, Red Lobster, Sony Playstation, Florida Orange Juice, Heineken and Nickelodeon
